FROM
THE HOT SEAT!

"From
the hot seat" quite literally since in Geoff's Jaguar the passenger sits
right above the exhaust system which becomes really quite hot!
As I looked down the flowing wings of the car at the fast approaching corner
and then across at Geoff heaving at the steering wheel, I realised that I was
not alone in being hot. However, I couldn't imagine a better way to be cooked.
The sun was shining from a deep blue sky, the temperature was about 30 degrees
centigrade and I was a passenger in a "D" type doing "demonstration
laps" and waving to the large crowd which lined the circuit in the centre
of Tours.
As Geoff steered the Jaguar into the next blind and very tight corner, and yet
another bead of sweat formed on his brow, I was struck by the amount of sheer
physical effort required to drive the car on such a tight circuit. Of course
the "D" type was never designed for the twists and turns of a street
circuit. It was conceived to deal with the specific challenges posed by the
31/2 mile long Mulsanne straight, some fifty miles to the north. History shows
that it achieved its goal magnificently.
My two sessions as a passenger during the demonstration runs were the culmination
of a truly superb weekend at the Grand Prix de Tours, but they will not be my
main lasting memory of the event. That is reserved for a moment very early on
the Saturday morning when Jane and I were following the Jaguar, being driven
in a spirited fashion, through the early morning mist on minor roads lined with
poplars. The sight and the sound were pure magic ...
